Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

The OJT will perform a combination of activities under the supervision of a skilled highway construction worker to become familiar with highway construction. These activities include but are not limited to:

· Guardrail/Fencing

· Pipe Laying

· Carpentry

· Curbing

· Signing

· Paving

· Blasting/Drilling

· Traffic Control

· Concrete Structures

· Seeding and Mulching

· Clean up

· Grading

A typical program under this classification will consist of the following:

· Familiarization (30 hours)

o Safety

o Layout, knowledge of right-of-way, alignment stakes, grade stakes, blueprints

o Tools/Equipment used in highway construction

o Public Relations

· Traffic Control (40 hours)

o Safety

o Public traffic/Construction traffic

o Sign erection and maintenance

· Piping (80 hours)

o Safety

o Trenching

o Bedding

o Positioning, joining, aligning, and sealing pipe sections, including culvert and multiplate

o Backfill and compaction

· Concrete Structures (120 hours)

o Safety

o Box culverts, inlets and headwall form work, reinforcing bars

o Placing concrete

o Stripping and salvage (forms)

· Grading (140 hours)

o Safety

o Providing railway stake-out assistance

o Grading and marking of stakes

o Rough/Fine grading of materials

· Surfacing (40 hours)

o Safety

o Mixing and placing concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials using hand tools and, where appropriate,minimum heavy equipment

· Curbing (40 hours)

o Curbs and sidewalk placement – granite, asphalt, and concrete

· Clean-Up (20 hours)

o Safety

o Placing/Spreading loam

o Seeding and mulching

o Equipment/Tool maintenance

Required Qualifications:

Essential functions of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation):

Must be willing and eager to learn about the construction industry

Must be willing to work extended hours with possible night and/or weekend work as well as overnights

A valid driver’s license is essential for this position.

Vermont residents are encouraged to apply.

All applicants must pass the screening tests for VAOT that include an interest survey and a pre-employment questionnaire.

Previous experience working in road construction is preferred but not required.

Candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screen.(Drug-Free Employer)

Perform a variety of tasks that may include periodically having to lift heavy objects, stand for extended periods of time, stretch, walk, climb and bend under potentially adverse field conditions and be able to perform visual tasks such as backup spotting and hear and react to back up alarms, per safety protocol

Compensation:

Competitive wage commensurate with experience. Excellent benefit package including company paid health, dental and vision insurance with a company-funded retirement plan.

Hourly Wage

35.27 - 35.27

Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as related work experience, market conditions, education/training, certifications and other credentials, overtime when applicable, as well as applicable knowledge and skills.
